About The Animals

The Animals is the name of a band from Newcastle, England, active since 1963.

After their initial fame, the band relocated in London. They are known for their blues songs, although their main genres were R&B and psychedelic rock. One of their greatest songs and a signature song is the track "The House of the Rising Sun", which became a hit and charted at the top. Between the years 1966-1969, they have been known under the name "Eric Burdon and the Animals".

In 1992 they renamed themselves to "Valentine’s Animals", yet in the following 7 years they adopted the name "Animals II". Since 2001, they have been known under the brand "Animals & Friends".

The group has recorded for many labels, such as Atco, MGM, Decca, I.R.S., Atlantic and even Columbia Records.

They are known for hit songs such as "It’s My Life", "Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood" and later "When I Was Young" or "Sky Pilot". The year 1994 meant their inclusion in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Their first album was released in the year 1964 with two editions, one in the UK and one in the US. The next year, they released "The Animals on Tour", which only got out in the US. Two albums released in both the UK and US followed, in 1965 and 1966, respectively. Their titles were "Animal Tracks" and "Animalisms", respectively. Another US release followed in 1966, titled "Animalism".

When they changed their name in "Eric Burdon & The Animals", five other albums followed. First, in 1967, the album "Eric is Here" was released in the US. That same year, "Winds of Change" got released. One year later, another album was out, titled "The Twain Shall Meet".

The last two albums for "Eric Burdon & The Animals" were also released in the year 1968.

First there was "Every One of Us" in the US, then "Love Is". After re-renaming themselves into "The Animals", they released two other albums, the first one in 1977. That album was called "Before We Were So Rudely Interrupted". Six years later, the group came back with "Ark".

The Animals have also composed music for movies, starting with the year 1964, when they wrote "Blue Feeling" and "Around and Around" for the movie "Get Yourself a College Girl".

Later, in 1983, they wrote for "Purple Haze", coming up with the song "When I Was Young". They were also featured in the movie "Casino" from 1995, when they wrote "House of the Rising Sun".
