"Wicked: The Untold Story of the Witches of Oz" is the full name of a musical act written and composed by Stephen Schwartz.
The story was included in a book written by Winnie Holzman. The original story for Wicked comes, however, from a novel from 1995 written by Gregory Maguire. The original novel is a story derived from "The Wizard of Oz", the movie from 1939.
The interpretation of the musical features the view of the witches of Oz. The main story concentrates on a friendship between Glinda the Good and witch Elphaba. The musical has been produced by the film studio Universal Studios. The production team also included David Stone, director Joe Mantello, choreographer Wayne Cilento and Marc Platt. The premiere took place on the 30th October, 2003 at the theatre of Gershwin, in New York City.
The main characters have been played by Idina Menzel, Joel Grey and Kristin Chenoweth. Menzel had the role of Elphaba, while Joel Grey was the Wizard and Chenoweth starred as Glinda. The original show managed to win a number of 3 Tony Awards, as well as a number of 6 Drama Desk Awards.
The album was also awarded with a Grammy Award. As of 2013, the Broadway representation has been played for more than 4500 times. A performance usually lasts 150 minutes.
"Wicked" has had great success on the Broadway scene, which inspired many versions of the show. Many remakes have been created in North America. One of those is the Laurence Olivier Award. The musical numbers consist of two acts. The first act starts with the orchestra, which plays an "Overture".
Glinda alongside the citizens of Oz are featured in "No One Mourns the Wicked". The next 2 scenes are "Dear Old Shiz" and "The Wizard and I". Elphaba continues to star in two more scenes, which are titled "What is this Feeling?" and "Something Bad".
Two scenes featuring Glinda follow, namely "Dancing Through Life" and "Popular". Elphaba comes back for "I’m Not That Girl" and "One Short Day". Then, the Wizard has its solo scene, called "A Sentimental Man". Elphaba and Glinda co-star in the last scene from the act, "Defying Gravity".
Act two of the musical consist of 10 more scenes.
The first two feature the citizens of Oz and are the reprise for the first act’s second scene, followed by "Thank Goodness". Elphaba appears in "The Wicked Witch of the East", followed by the scene "Wonderful".
The reprise for the eighth scene from act 1 is next, starring Glinda. After four more scenes, the musical has a "Finale" with Glinda, Elphaba and the citizens.
