She wrote it at age sixteen. It is part of the album "Speak Now", which was released in 2010, but the artist began the work on the tracks two years earlier.

The song was recorded at the Stonehurst Studios, from Bowling Green, Kentucky and at the Aimeeland Studio and Blackbird Studio, in Hollywood, California. She also had a recording session at the Pain In The Art Studios and Starstruck Studio from Nashville, Tennessee.

The country pop song was produced by Nathan Chapman and Taylor Swift. The whole recording process lasted from 2008 until 2010.

"Sparks Fly" was released on July 18th, 2011 as the fifth single from "Speak Now". The release was made on "Now That's What I Call Country Volume III".

The song has 4:22 minutes and it is played in D Minor, as Swift's vocal range goes up to two octaves. As she stated, the lyrics tell the story of how she fell for the wrong person but couldn't end the relationship.

The single received very good feedback from the music critics whom mainly praised on the upbeat tempo. Rolling Stone magazine praised on the singer's vocal performance while a journalist from Sin magazine named it "a bubbly tune", as well as another song from the album, "Long Live".

The music video for "Sparks Fly" was released on August 10th, 2011 on her official website and the director was Christian Lamb.

It's a mixture of footage from her concerts during the Speak Now World Tour, in which she performed songs like "Mean", "Back To December", "Better Than Revenge" and "Speak Now". Swift won a Teen Choice Award with the song for "Choice Music: Country Song". Also, she received a nomination for "Favorite Song" at the Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards, from 2012.

She performed the song live on many of her concerts from the Speak Now World Tour, from 2011 to 2012, as the opening song.
