Johann Sebastian Bach is the name of a famous Baroque musician and composer from Germany.
He was born on the 31th of March 1685 and died on the 28th of July, 1750. In the Baroque times, he helped improve the style of his country’s music with skill additions in counterpoint organization, as well as in motivic or harmonic organization.
He also managed to adapt textures and rhythms from other countries, such as Italian or French ones. As a composer, some of his most famous works have been the Brandenburg Concertos, the Mass in B Minor, the Goldberg Variations, his 2 Passions and many other cantatas. From around the number of 300 cantatas, it is reported that only about 200 are still around today.
He is known as a highly skilled artist, creator of beautiful technical melodies, which incite the intellectual mind.
Bach’s birth place was Eisenach, more specifically in Saxe-Eisenach.
There, he was born in an already established family of musicians. His father was a musical director in the town and his uncles were all professionals already in the music field. It is reported that his father was his teacher for violin, as well as harpsichord. His brother is the one who introduced him to the clavichord and opened his mind about the music in that age.
After two years at a school in Luneburg, he graduated and started getting involved in music. He occupied several positions, such as director of music for Leopold, the prince of Anhalt-Kothen. Then, he was a cantor in Leipzig, at the Thomasschule. He also served as a composer in the royal court for Augustus the Third.
While he was living, Bach was known as one of the best organists, but his original music compositions were not much appreciated at that time. In the 19th century, with the rebirth of musical inquiries, Bach was starting to get attention and was since then regarded as one of the best composers ever.
As an organist, he created preludes, tocattas, fantasias, fugues and even chorale preludes. He created a book with preludes during the 1708-1714 period. That book, which contained a number of 64 unfinished works, was called "Little Organ Book". Other of his famous works were collected and named, such as his keyboard works: "The Well-Tempered Clavier", "Inventions and Sinfonias", "Goldberg Variations", "Overture in the French Style", "Italian Concerto", "Aria variata alla maniera italiana".
He was also famous for orchestral music, chamber music, vocal works and choral works, motets, passions, Magnificat, oratorios and many other works and styles.
