The band’s main goal was to tackle stringent social issues through this song, so as to highlight the problems that society is facing nowadays. As a result, matters such as religion and racism are being commented upon. However, the world is painted as a place still worth living in, regardless of how many problems it is facing.
In compliance with the lyrics, the music video for "Livin’ on the Edge" portraits a harsh image of the world surrounding us. The scenes include depicting vandalism, theft, joyriding and airbag crashing among others. Directed by Marty Callner, it received a very positive review, being praised world-wide for its groundbreaking theatrical scenes and special effects. The video earned the band a Viewer's Choice award at the 1993 MTV Video Music Awards and was voted "Best Video" by Metal Edge readers in the magazine's 1993 Readers' Choice Awards.
