About Westlife

Westlife is an Irish band founded in July 1998 by Simon Cowell and Louis Walsh, embodying performers Nicky Byrne, Kian Egan, Mark Feehily, Brian McFadden and Shane Filan.

The group was initially called "Westside" but the name was taken so they stood for "Westlife".

At the opening of Boyzone and Backstreet Boys’ concert in Dublin in 1998 they had their first major break. Next year in April they released their first single "Swear it again", making it on the UK and Ireland tops.

In 1999 the band released the singles "If I Let you Go" and "Flying Without Wings", the last one being included on the soundtrack of the film „Pokémon: The Movie 2000".

On November that year they made their first album "Westlife", reaching number 2 in the UK Top 40. Several other songs made it to the top that year in the UK such as "I Have A Dream" / "Seasons in the Sun" and "Fool Again".

After a short tour in US, UK and Asia for their debut album, "Westlife" released a second and third album ("Coast to Coast" and "World of Our Own") in the next two years, both reaching number one in the UK tops.

The band gained a lot of success releasing another album "Turnaround" in September 2003 and working on the making of a TV documentary featuring the daily life and tour experiences of the group. Just before their fourth world tour in 2004, Brian Mc Fadden left the group to spend time with his family and work on solo projects.

During 2004-2008 they released 4 more albums: "Allow Us to Be Frank", "Face to Face", "The Love Album" and "Back Home".

At The World Music Awards in 2004 Westlife was recognized as the "Best Irish Act of the year".

On 19 October 2011, Westlife officially announced they were splitting after a Greatest Hits album and a farewell tour. They described the split as an "amicable" one and they wanted a "well-earned break".

Three months after the split, Byrne revealed that members of the group fought with one another more and more often in the latter years leading up to the split and he felt that it was the right time to end their time together.

Their final concert was on 23 June 2012 at Croke park Stadium in Dublin and the tickets were sold out in 5 minutes and was screened live in more than 200 cinemas worldwide.
