About Stephen Sondheim

Stephen Joshua Sondheim is the full name of a famous musical theater composer and lyricist.

Born in New York, he went to Fieldston School, then the Military Academy and George School, during which he managed to write a musical, his first one, titled "By George".

Having being mentored by Oscar Hammerstein II, Stephen managed to meet Harold Prince, with whom he will work years later. Oscar has made Sondheim work and create musicals from scratch and he managed to create these musicals: "All That Glitters", "High Tor", "Mary Poppins", "Climb High", which never got released as official works.

As a student, he managed to graduate magna cum laude from a liberal arts college in 1950, managing to rewrite a musical and perform it three times. Stephen began to work together with Milton Babbitt, studying composers such as Jerome Kern. Soon he began to write music for the TV show "Topper". Meeting Leonard Bernstein through Arthur Laurents, Stephen wrote the lyrics for Bernstein’s "Romeo & Juliet".

Working even on the famous "West Side Story", later in 1959 Stephen wrote the lyrics for Gypsy Rose Lee’s memoir, titled "Gypsy", getting played over 700 times, being fairly successful. In 1962 he wrote music and lyrics for "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum", which ran over 900 times, the show also winning more than one Tony Award.

Stephen Sondheim wrote lyrics or music for many musicals, among his works there can be remembered: "Anyone Can Whistle", "Follies", "A Little Night Music", "Pacific Overtures", "Bounce", "Company", "Sweeney Todd", "Sunday in the Park with George", "Into the Woods", "Assassins", "Passion", "Merrily We Roll Along", "Road Show""The Frogs", "Do I Hear a Waltz?", .

Winning one Academy Award and eight Tony Awards, as well as a Special Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Theater, as well as a Pulitzer, eight Grammys, Sondheim has also wrote for movies, "Goodbye for Now" for movie "Reds" and five songs for "Dick Tracy", "Sooner or Later" winning the Best Song Award.

A great artist and probably the most-known American music composer for theaters, Stephen Sondheim is also one of the best lyricists ever.
