About Gym Class Heroes
Gym Class Heroes is the name of a rap rock and alternative rock group from New York.
The band started in the year 1997 and also incorporates the genre of alternative hip hop.
They have worked for the labels Decaydance, BatSquad, Atlantic and Fueled by Ramen. Gym Class Heroes have also been associated with other musical acts, the likes of Kill the Frontman, Oh Land, Ra Ra Riot, Bruno Mars, Ryan Tedder, Adam Levine, Patrick Stump and Neon Hitch.
During Travie McCoy’s high school period, he met Matt McGinley in the gym class. Matt was a drummer, so they decided to start a band.
Gym Class Heroes draw inspiration from the genres of funk, hip hop, reggae and even rock. In 2003, they signed Disashi Lumumba-Kasongo as the guitar player and Eric Roberts as the bass player. Then, they signed record deals with Fueled by Ramen, as well as with Decaydance Records. Their debut album was called "The Papercut Chronicles" and started going on tours in order to promote their release. Popularity among fans rose as they played at the Warped Tour, as well as at The Bamboozle.
The year 2006 was the year of their second album release. The album got named "As Cruel as School Children" and it was very successful, getting Gold certified. A single from the album was particularly successful, a song called "Cupid’s Chokehold". It has risen up to the fourth place on the Billboard Hot 100 charts.
Another song from the album, "Clothes Off!" reached the fifth place in the United Kingdom. The date of the release of their album number three was the ninth of September, year 2008. Their album was called "The Quilt", featuring many other musicians. In 2009, they started a short hiatus.
On the fifteenth of November, 2011, Gym Class Heroes released studio album number five. It has been called "The Papercut Chronicles II" and was a great success. The current band members for the group are lead singer Travie McCoy, guitarist Disashi Lumumba-Kasongo, bassist Eric Roberts and drummer Matt McGinley.
Among former members, we can remember bassist Ryan Geise, guitarist Milo Bonacci, sampler Steve Decker, guitarist Jason Amsel and lyricist and singer Sammy Shuffler.
In 2007, they were nominated for two MTV Video Music Awards, for Best Group and for Best New Artist, managing to win the second one.
They have also been nominated for the Ultimate Urban award at the MTV European Music Awards. In 2012, they were also nominated for a MTV Video Music Award, three Teen Choice Awards and 2 MuchMusic Video Awards.
