"Can’t Hold Us" is a song by the USA hip hop and R&B artists Macklemore and Ryan Lewis.
It was featured as single number three for their first studio album, titled "The Heist".
The song was recorded in the 2009-2010 period and released in August, 2011. It was made available as a CD single, on digital format and as 7 inch as well. Produced by Ryan Lewis for the Macklemore label, it was written by Ben Haggerty and Ray Dalton, with Lewis contributing. Dalton also appeared as a singer on the track.
The song went to become the top of the Billboard Hot 100 charts in the US, being a hit there, as well as in Australia, where it also got to rank number one. There has been a shorter Radio Edit version, which is preferred in the live performances of the song. The music video for the song got a nomination for Best Music Video at the Grammy Awards from 2014.
The critics praised the song in general, especially for the piano lines and the dynamic involved in the beats. It was a true hit of the summer, with a chorus that lifts you up.
"Can’t Hold Us" also performed well commercially, even internationally. It got to chart in the top three songs in various countries, such as Austria, Belgium, Canada, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Luxembourg, Mexico, Poland, Sweden, United Kingdom.
A special note is that the single topped the UK Indie charts, the UK R&B charts, the US Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, the Mainstream Top 40 and the US Rhythmic Billboard charts. At the end of 2013, on the year-end charts, it remained in the top 10 on the US Rap Songs charts, the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and the Billboard Hot 100, as well as in Australia and Germany. On the year-end UK Singles charts, it ranked thirteenth.
"Can’t Hold Us" by Macklemore was certified four times Platinum in Australia, Canada and the United States, two times Platinum in Denmark, Italy, New Zealand and Sweden and Platinum in Belgium, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.
The single also managed to win the Choice R&B/Hip-Hop Song award at the 2013 Teen Choice Awards. Also, at the MTV Video Music Awards, it got nominated for 3 categories, winning an award.
The nominations were for Best Hip-Hop Video, Best Direction in a Video and Best Cinematography in a Video, winning the first one. At the 2014 Grammy Awards, it was also nominated for Best Music Video.
