About Nat King Cole

Nathaniel Adams Coles, also known as Nat King Cole, is known as one of the greatest jazz singers.

A notable aspect was also his baritone voice which he used in big band and on his jazz songs.

The singer was born on March 17th, 1919, in Montgomery, Alabama.

At a young age, he was taught to play the organ by his mother, Perlina Coles, who was also a church organist.

The first song which the four years old performed, before starting the formal lessons, was "Yes! We have No Bananas". He started with gospel music, jazz, but the musical areas he approached reached classical music from Johann Sebastian Bach and Sergei Rachamaninoff.

The family moved to Chicago, Illinois where he would go out in clubs to listen to Louis Armstrong, Jimmie Noone and Earl Hines.

Nat King Cole became active in music in the mid 1930s and adopted the nickname Nat Cole.

He was part of the trio King Cole Swingsters, along Oscar Moore, for the guitar and Wesley Prince for the double bass. Cole took the piano. They enjoyed success and popularity and appeared on some radio shows like "Kraft Music Hall" and "Old Gold, Chesterfield Supper Club".

His first successful song came in 1943 with "Straighten Up And Fly Right". He signed with Capitol Records and sold more than half a million copies.

Although he was not interested and has not been remembered for the rock genre, he was a pioneer as his song was one of the first rock and roll records. With the success came the appearances at famous television shows such as "The Ed Sullivan Shows", where he appeared 14 times, "The Garry Moore Show", "The Jackie Gleason Show", "The Danny Kaye Show" and others.

In 1956, he began his own project, named "The Nat King Cole Show", which debuted on NBC.

In 1951, he released he released his signature song, "Unforgettable".

Other great hits include "Nature Boy", in 1948, "Too Young", in 1951, "(Get Your Kicks On) Route 66", in 1946 and "Mona Lisa", in 1950, "A Blossom Fell", "Smile, "If I May" or "Pretend". These huge hits became widely popular and sold millions and millions of copies throughout the world. Some of his songs were re-arranged decades later and once again, re-entered the charts.

Nat King Cole is one of greatest pianist and jazz artists the world has ever known and one of the immortal figures in music.
