About Bill Withers

Bill Withers is the name of a singer and songwriter from West Virginia, USA.

His interest in music appeared after spending a total of nine years in the Navy, from the age of 18 to 27. In 1967 he moved to Los Angeles in order to make his dream come true.

He started working to support himself and with the money that he could spare, he payed for his demo tapes, selling them, as well as getting locally signed for gigs in different clubs.

He made his great debut with a song called "Ain’t No Sunshine", but he was not convinced that he was ready to become a full time musician, calling himself a beginner at that time.

The beginning of the 1970s period was good for him, since his demo tapes were viewed with good eyes by the owner of a label, Clarence Avant. Sussex Records, Avant’s label, signed him and assigned him with Booker T. Jones in order to start working on his debut album production. The final album was called "Just As I Am" and got released in 1971. The album included "Ain’t No Sunshine" as a single, the second single being "Grandma’s Hands".

His debut album brought him enough recognition in order to tour alongside an improvised band. In 1972, Withers was awarded a Grammy for Best R&B Song, thanks to his single "Ain’t No Sunshine". The song had sold more than 1 million times worldwide and was already certified Platinum by the RIAA.

His next album was called "Still Bill". The album was fairly successful as well, especially with the single "Lean on Me". For a week, the single actually topped the charts, also managing to sell over 3 million times. It has been Bill’s second single to attain Gold status. "Use Me" followed, which also got awarded Gold certification.

The end of 1972 also brought a live album for Withers, called "Bill Withers, Live at Carnegie Hall".

Bill Withers performed alongside great artists such as Etta James, James Brown, B.B. King and has collaborated with Gladys Knight & the Pips. In 1975, he switched labels, signing with Columbia Records. His first album for Columbia was called "Making Music, Making Friends". The album spawned the single called "She’s Lonely", which got included in "Looking for Mr. Goodbar", a movie.

The next years meant more albums for him: "Naked & Warm" in 1976, "Menagerie" in 1977, "Bout Love" in 1978, "Get On Down". His last studio album was "Watching You Watching Me" in 1985.
