"Long Tall Sally" is the title of a rock ‘n’ roll song with blues influences, featured as a single by Little Richard from the 1956 album "Here’s Little Richard".
Recorded on the tenth of February, year 1956, at the J&M Studio, "Long Tall Sally" was released in March 1956 by the label Specialty SP572. On the album, the B-side for "Long Tall Sally" was the song "Slippin’ and Slidin’", which was made available initially on a 7 inch vinyl format.
The song was written by Richard himself, aided by Enotris Johnson and Robert Blackwell. The producer for "Long Tall Sally" was Bumps Blackwell.
"Long Tall Sally" was also included on the LP called "Here’s Little Richard". This single was fairly successful at the time, getting at the top of the US Billboard rhythm and blues charts. It stood at the first rank for almost 5 months. On the pop charts, the best position it reached was the sixth rank. In 1956, "Long Tall Sally" managed to win the Triple Crown award from Cash Box.
The Rolling Stone magazine included the Little Richard original version on their list of 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.
"Long Tall Sally" by Little Richard had lots of fame and popularity, becoming a rock and roll classic and getting covered by a great number of artists throughout the world. In popular culture, "Long Tall Sally" appears in the film "Predator" from 1987 in a helicopter scene. Then, later in the film, in another scene, a character is shown singing the lyrics from the song.
In 2010, with a newer version of "Predator", the song was also included in the ending credits segment. In a 1997 novel called "Underworld", written by Don DeLillo, the song is argued by the characters of the book.
The song was played in a musical for the Broadway scene, titled "Million Dollar Quartet". Eddie Clendening was picturing famous Elvis Presley in the musical, which started in the New York City in the year 2010. The song was also included in a video game titled "Mafia 2", featured on a radio station. It also appears in the show called "Only Fools and Horses".
It was also featured in season 9, as well as in season 13 of the show "Dancing with the Stars". It is also used in another video game called "Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon". In 1988, it was also used in a scene for the movie "Red Scorpion".
